It’s very easy to pontificate about the state of whatever subject you are addressing. It’s a whole ‘nother thing to translate words into action. When I began my doctoral studies in curriculum design, my main goal was to build an inter-disciplinary arts educational construct that addressed the many shortcomings I discovered during my first venture into academic dogma. I left that experience battered and bruised. I was unable to realize my vision, but I did learn many things about the process. When I returned to academia as a graduate student, this singular goal was quickly exposed as too narrow. Too self-serving. I was thinking of my own pain rather than the needs of young people beginning to trace my steps into the world of professional artistry. This disconnect revealed the true nature of my inquiry. What made me want to be an arts professional? What helped, or hindered my progress. How can an educational design assist aspirants surmount the obstacles and take advantage of the positive events that come upon them. The end result of my journey was not only the academic construct I desired, but I was able to build a solid foundation with which to build this innovative design and make it real. So, a new journey begins…
